1. Manuscript collections do not circulate.
2. Care must be exercised in handling manuscripts; records must not be marked, folded, leaned upon, or paper-clipped. The use of ink pens may be restricted by the staff; please consult the staff.
3. Researchers will be allowed to use only one box at a time. Manuscripts should be kept in their original order. If they are out of order, call this to the attention of the staff. Only archives staff are permitted to obtain material from shelves, cabinets, and boxes. When finished with a collection, return records to the staff.
4. The use of certain manuscripts and archives is restricted or limited by statute or by office or library of origin. For the protection of the collection, the archives staff also reserves the right to restrict the use of records that are not fully processed, records of exceptional value, and fragile records.
5. Researchers using archives and manuscripts for publication should familiarize themselves with the subject of copyright (literary property rights) and libel. Researchers are cautioned to examine the issue particularly concerning incoming correspondence in collections, especially if quotation or publication is planned or anticipated. Transfer of copyright by a donor(s) encompasses only those items to which the author has legal title. The department reserves the right to refuse to copy materials if, in our judgement, filling the order would result in a violation of copyright. The UAA Consortium Library and the Archives and Special Collections Department staff disclaim any responsibility for violations of copyright through the improper use of copies made for researchers.
6. When using original manuscript materials for papers, dissertations and publications, the Archives and Special Collections Department, UAA Consortium Library, is to be cited as the source repository. When copied manuscript material is used or quoted, the original repository as well as this department are to be cited. Check with the staff to determine whether the library of origin has placed restrictions on the reproduction of the records.
7. The researcher agrees not to place any materials copied for or by him/her in the Archives and Special Collections Department in any other library, archives, or manuscripts repository.
My signature is my assurance that I agree to abide by the above rules and any and all restrictions on the collections and records series.
