PUBLICATION OF MANUSCRIPT MATERIALS

This department exists in part to make manuscript materials available for use in scholarly research and publication. In normal usage, the researcher/scholar or other user is expected to properly cite materials from the collections in the UAA Archives and Manuscripts Department. Individuals wishing to publish full or substantial portions of collections for which the university owns copyright (for example: a diary, journals, a group of letters, a collection of writings - poetry, essays, articles) are required to have the written permission of the UAA Archives and Special Collections Department to do so as well as to pay a publications fee (see Statement of Intended Use). As in the case of the use of other materials such as photographs, the university should be compensated for that use of its materials which brings about commercial benefit (profit) to the user, author, or editor.

The fees charged will be based on a proportion or percentage of the profit accruing to the user, author, or editor as determined in negotiation between that person(s) and representatives of the UAA Archives and Special Collections Department. Unless otherwise determined, the university's fee will be limited to no more than fifty percent of the royalties accruing to the user, author, or editor from the publisher.

Commercial fees may be waived in the following cases: 1) where the publication effort is initiated by the university library; 2) where the university library is a participant with the University of Alaska Press; and 3) where the university library is a participant with another university (or other) press. Fees may also be waived, or substantially reduced, in cases where the donor or their immediate heirs seeks to publish their own works, writings, or other materials.

All negotiated agreements shall be in writing and shall include the press which is publishing the work.
