Patrick Healy was born in 1834 and was educated at Holy Cross College. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1850 and took his vows in 1852. After teaching at a number of schools, he was sent to study in Europe, attaining a doctorate in philosophy in 1865. He returned to the United States and taught at Georgetown University; he later became Vice President (1869) and President (1874). He retired because of illness in 1882. Thereafter he stayed with his brother Bishop Healy in Maine. He died in Georgetown in 1910.

This collection contains Rev. Patrick Healy's diaries which were kept on various trips between 1858 and 1887. There are eight volumes. They record trips to Europe (1858, 1886-1887), Spain (1863), across Panama to San Francisco (1878-1879), and from San Francisco to Alaska (1883-1885). The latter diaries contain his observations while on a voyage of the Revenue Cutter Corwin.
